Tokyo, August 4, 2026: A devastating heat wave has claimed the lives of three lions at Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo, raising concerns about the impact of extreme weather on wildlife. The zoo's spokeswoman confirmed that the lionesses died from suspected heatstroke, with symptoms including dehydration and multiple organ failure.
The Heat Wave's Impact on the Zoo
Since mid-July, ten out of sixteen lions at the zoo have shown signs of distress due to the heat, including loss of appetite and decreased activity. The zoo has been taking measures to combat the heat, such as sprinkling water, improving ventilation, and installing spot air conditioners, but the sudden onset of extreme heat took them by surprise.
Human and Animal Suffering
The heat wave is not just affecting animals; it has also led to a surge in heatstroke cases among humans. Close to 18,600 people were hospitalized for heatstroke between July 20 and 26, with 45 deaths recorded. Japan experiences around 1,300 heat-related deaths annually and aims to reduce this number by half by 2030.
Climate Change and Extreme Weather
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat events in Japan to human-induced climate change. The highest recorded temperature in the country was 41.8°C in Isesaki, north of Tokyo, on August 5, 2025.
