The first meeting of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the 13th National Parliament convened today at the National Parliament Building. Chaired by BNP Standing Committee Member Md. Aman Ullah Aman, the meeting focused on enhancing accountability and transparency within the ministry. The gathering aimed to overcome past stigmas and emphasized the critical role of the National Press Club in ensuring journalists' freedom of expression.
Participants at the meeting highlighted the contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to journalistic freedom. They expressed concerns over the growing culture of abusive language in politics and called for responsible actions to combat misinformation and disinformation on social media. The Cyber Security Act was suggested as a tool to prevent such practices.
The meeting recognized the National Press Club as a vital platform for journalists to exercise their professional rights. Committee members urged necessary reforms and renovations of the National Press Club, particularly modernizing the Press Club auditorium to meet contemporary needs. The renovation aims to enhance the facility's attractiveness and functionality.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Barrister Andaleeve Rahman, State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury, and committee members Ashraf Uddin, MP; Mostafizur Rahman Babu, MP; Majibur Rahman, MP; Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, MP; Fahmida Haque, MP; Shafiqul Islam, MP; and Nazmun Nahar, MP attended the meeting. Additionally, the Information and Broadcasting ministry secretary, directors general of various departments under the ministry, heads of relevant agencies, senior officials, and concerned officials of the National Parliament Secretariat were present.
