Commerce Ministry Committee Convenes First Meeting to Address Critical Economic Matters

The first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad took place today at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Chaired by Md Khaled Hossain Mahbub, the meeting was attended by key officials and committee members, including Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir and other notable figures. The session began with an introductory segment where the committee was briefed on the activities of the Ministry of Commerce and its affiliated organizations.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the activities of the Bangladesh Competition Commission. The committee recommended that detailed information on the commission’s institutional expenditure over the past 10 years, the amount of fines collected, and cases pending disposal be presented at the next meeting. This recommendation underscores the committee's intent to maintain transparency and accountability in the commission's operations.

The meeting also addressed measures to reduce the amount of government subsidy for the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB). Discussions included the process of appointing dealers and relevant policies aimed at ensuring efficient use of subsidies. The Commerce Ministry secretary, chairman of the Bangladesh Competition Commission, additional secretaries of the ministry, and relevant officials and employees of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat were present to provide insights and updates.

The Bangladesh Competition Commission plays a crucial role in ensuring fair competition within the market, protecting consumer interests, and preventing anti-competitive practices.
