The government has shut down over 250 illegal healthcare facilities nationwide, while warning 200 others to make necessary corrections. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has conducted regular drives against illegal hospitals, clinics, blood banks, and diagnostic centres since March 29, 2026. Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain has participated in several of these drives.

Inspections and Shutdowns

DGHS Director Dr Md. Nurul Islam stated that inspections have been conducted at nearly 5,000 illegal and substandard healthcare facilities. More than 250 illegal clinics have been shut down, while 200 have been given time to correct their issues. Facilities with expired licenses have also been given time to renew them. Around 6,000 clinics have renewed their licenses, and applications from another 2,000 to 3,000 facilities are under scrutiny.

Ensuring Quality Healthcare

The drives aim to restore discipline in the healthcare sector, increase public confidence, and ensure safe medical services. A campaign has been launched against illegal and substandard facilities, with action taken against those operating without licenses and providing poor-quality services. According to a 2024 report, 1,285 hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centres were operating illegally, with the highest number in the Dhaka division.

Strict Measures and Legal Action

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain emphasized that any facility failing to maintain minimum healthcare standards will be shut down immediately. DGHS Director General Prof. Dr Prabhat Chandra Biswas stated that the nationwide drives aim to eliminate irregularities and restore transparency in the healthcare sector. Authorities are verifying licenses, testing medical equipment, checking compliance with health standards, and verifying medical professionals' certificates. Immediate measures such as fines, sealing of facilities, or suspension of operations are being taken where irregularities are found.

Why This Matters for Bangladesh

Ensuring the quality and safety of healthcare services is crucial for public health and confidence in the medical system. The government's crackdown on illegal facilities aims to protect patients from substandard care and fraudulent practices, ultimately contributing to a more reliable and trustworthy healthcare environment.
