On August 2, 2026, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain conducted an unexpected inspection of the Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex in Gaibandha. During his visit, he addressed issues of alleged negligence and irregularities involving a Sub-Assistant Community Medical Officer (SACMO).

Immediate Action on Vaccine Allegation

Patient Shamsunnahar, who had suffered a dog bite, reported to the minister that despite the availability of the anti-rabies vaccine at the hospital, the on-duty SACMO directed her to purchase it from an external source. She complied, spending Taka 1,030 on the vaccine outside the hospital premises.

Angered by this, the minister promptly contacted the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer (UHFPO), Dr. Masudur Rahman Akand, to take disciplinary action against SACMO Hedayetul Islam Chowdhury for allegedly forcing the patient to buy the vaccine outside the hospital.

Comprehensive Inspection of Facilities

During his visit, the minister thoroughly inspected various hospital departments, including the emergency room, different wards, the hospital store, and the kitchen. He also examined the quality of food provided to patients.

Following this, he visited a nearby private clinic and a diagnostic center to assess their operations and services.

Why This Matters for Bangladesh

Ensuring efficient and transparent healthcare services is crucial for Bangladesh's public health system. This inspection highlights the importance of accountability and the need for corrective actions to maintain public trust in healthcare facilities.
