DHAKA - State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr MA Muhit today revealed the government's ambitious plans to overhaul the country's healthcare system through significant state investment in technology-driven innovation and research. Speaking at a plenary discussion titled "Health Innovation for All: Expanding Access to Affordable and Inclusive Care" held at the Plenary Hall of Novo Theatre in Dhaka, Muhit emphasized the urgent need to transform the health sector into a technology-friendly and modern system.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology as part of the Bangladesh Innovation Fair 2026, saw notable participation from Dr Zubaida Rahman, the Prime Minister's wife and Vice President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, who spoke as the chief guest. Prime Minister's Special Assistant for Health Dr SM Ziauddin Haider moderated the event, while Prof AK Azad Khan presented the keynote paper.
Dr Muhit highlighted that the traditional "business-as-usual" approach in healthcare is no longer viable. "The health sector is being transformed into a technology-friendly and modern system to ensure quality, affordable and equitable healthcare for all, regardless of rich or poor people," he asserted. The state minister outlined specific initiatives, including the establishment of a national digital health system, the introduction of health cards, and the creation of a well-defined referral network aimed at protecting the health of the country's 20 crore citizens.
Once the central platform is established, it will store health-related information for all citizens, ensuring transparency and accountability within the healthcare system. "This will be a game-changer for how we deliver healthcare in Bangladesh," Muhit remarked. The proposed digital health system is expected to streamline patient care, reduce medical errors, and enhance the overall efficiency of healthcare services.
The introduction of health cards will provide a unique identifier for each citizen, allowing for seamless access to medical records and services. This initiative is anticipated to improve patient outcomes by ensuring that healthcare providers have quick and easy access to comprehensive patient histories. Additionally, the well-defined referral network will facilitate better coordination between primary, secondary, and tertiary care levels, ensuring that patients receive timely and appropriate care.
These technological advancements are part of a broader strategy to make healthcare more accessible and equitable. By leveraging technology, the government aims to bridge the gap between urban and rural healthcare services, ensuring that even the most remote areas have access to quality medical care. This initiative is expected to have a profound impact on public health, reducing disparities and improving overall health outcomes for the population.
