Yu Zidi's journey in the world of competitive swimming began at the age of six. Despite the challenges of balancing schoolwork with rigorous training, she never wavered in her pursuit of excellence. Her breakthrough came at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, where she helped China reach the 4x200m women's freestyle relay final. Although she did not swim in the final, her contribution in the heats earned her a historic bronze medal.
Yu's performances continued to impress as she narrowly missed out on medals in the 200m and 400m individual medley events and the 200m butterfly, finishing fourth in all three races. In November, she set a new Asian record in the women's 200m medley with a time of 2:07.41 at China's National Games.
Challenges and Dreams
Despite her remarkable success, Yu has spoken openly about the struggles she faces, particularly the heavy pressure placed upon her. "Sometimes I was so tired I could fall asleep even while eating," she revealed. The pressure to win the 400m medley at the National Games became so overwhelming that she considered quitting. However, her coach's encouragement to persevere and believe in herself helped her overcome these challenges.
Yu's dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. At the China national championships in June, she won the women's 400m medley with a time of 4:30.79, a performance that would have earned her silver at the Paris Games in 2024. "Although talent determines where you start, going further and standing taller is dependent on perseverance and effort day after day," she said. "There is still a long road ahead, and I will keep holding fast to my original dream, drawing strength from my team, to stand on the Olympic podium."
With the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, set to begin on September 19, Yu is eager to make her mark. "Train well, don't slack off. Demonstrate the level of your training and work hard to break past yourself," she told local media. As she prepares for the Asian Games and beyond, Yu Zidi remains a symbol of hope and inspiration, proving that with determination and hard work, dreams can become reality.
