Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today underscored the indispensable role of an independent, responsible, and strong media in establishing sustainable democracy. Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled 'Role of Media in Sustainable Democracy', organized by the Television Editors Council, he highlighted that democracy is not merely an electoral system but a culture that requires strengthening of various state institutions and fostering democratic practices.

Fakhrul emphasized that democracy cannot thrive without a robust media that is committed to truth and objectivity. He called for collective efforts from the government, media owners, journalists, and state institutions to build an effective democratic environment. The minister also stressed the need to ensure professional security, fair salaries, and benefits for journalists to enable them to work independently.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, the keynote speaker, noted that the July Mass Uprising had opened new possibilities for the country and that the media could play a crucial role in building trust between the government and the people. He advocated for effective coordination among the government, media owners, and advertisers to enhance the media's role.

The seminar was chaired by Television Editors Council Convener Dr. Abdul Hai Siddique and attended by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam, Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department Syed Abdal Ahmed, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, and various editors, senior journalists, and media organization representatives.
