State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury today handed over keys to newly built semi-pucca houses to 36 destitute and homeless families in Nandail upazila of Mymensingh. Yasser, also a lawmaker from Mymensingh-9 (Nandail) constituency, formally handed over the houses to the beneficiaries during a daylong programme in the upazila on Friday. The houses, built under the 'Swapno Bari' initiative, are expected to ease the hardship of families who had long been living in dilapidated homes.
At the programme held in Bahadurpur area of Moazzempur union, the state minister said ensuring that no one in Nandail remained hungry or homeless was one of his key electoral pledges. 'None will live in hunger and homelessness in Nandail. This was one of my prime electoral pledges,' he said, adding that the distribution of houses to 36 families was a step toward fulfilling that commitment. He said the government would gradually bring all homeless people in the upazila under the housing programme.
Yasser said he had personally supervised the construction of the houses. The beneficiaries became emotional while receiving the keys. 'I lived in a dilapidated house with my children. The state minister has given us a new home. I pray for him and hope he continues to help people like us,' said Hamida Khatun, one of the beneficiaries. Another beneficiary, Sabuj Mia of Bahadurpur village, said the new house had given his family a sense of security and opened up better prospects for his children after years of hardship.
Senior joint convener of Nandail Upazila BNP Mizanur Rahman Liton praised the initiative, describing the distribution of 'Swapno Bari' houses as commendable. Earlier in the day, Yasser travelled to Nandail from his residence in Gulshan, Dhaka, and attended Juma prayers at Moazzempur Shaheb-bari Mosque. He also inaugurated a road in Nandail municipality. Before returning to Dhaka, the state minister attended a views-exchange meeting with fertiliser dealers at the Nandail Upazila Parishad conference room.
