A new initiative has been launched in Bangladesh to train 500 young people in mobile phone repairing and entrepreneurship, aiming to bridge the skills gap in the booming mobile sector. The two-year programme, launched by the MetLife Foundation in partnership with Micro Industries Development Assistance and Services (MIDAS), will provide participants with practical and market-relevant skills to pursue self-employment and build sustainable livelihoods.
Empowering Youths with Market-Relevant Skills
With over 187 million mobile subscribers and nearly 75 percent of households owning smartphones, Bangladesh has a growing demand for skilled mobile phone technicians. The initiative aims to meet this demand by providing young people with the necessary skills to enter the mobile repairing sector. The training will cover practical aspects of mobile phone repairing and maintenance, as well as entrepreneurship skills to help participants start their own businesses.
A Partnership for Economic Empowerment
The MetLife Foundation, in collaboration with MIDAS, has committed to supporting this initiative. Ala Ahmad, CEO of MetLife Bangladesh, emphasized the importance of economic opportunity for financial security. 'By investing in the potential of young people, we are helping to create pathways for sustainable income, entrepreneurship, and long-term resilience in Bangladesh,' he said. Parveen Mahmud, Chairman of MIDAS, added that the programme will not only create employment opportunities but also contribute to building a more inclusive and resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem in the country.
Why This Matters for Bangladesh
This initiative is crucial for Bangladesh as it addresses the skills gap in the mobile sector, which is one of the fastest-growing industries in the country. By equipping young people with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge, the programme aims to foster economic empowerment and resilience. This will not only create jobs but also stimulate entrepreneurship and contribute to the overall economic growth of Bangladesh.
