Ninety-five families affected by a breach in an embankment at Litur Char in Kaigardashkathi area of Gaurambha union under Rampal upazila received government relief materials today. The relief was distributed by Rampal Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tamanna Ferdousi on behalf of the upazila administration at around 10 am. The relief items included rice, pulses, cooking oil, and packaged food, which were distributed among the families affected by tidal water that entered the locality and inundated hundreds of houses.
The distribution event was attended by Upazila Project Implementation Officer Saiful Islam, Gaurambha Union Administrator Md Habibur Rahman, Gaurambha Union BNP President Master Mujibur Rahman Joardar, and other local leaders. A week ago, hundreds of people in Litur Char and adjoining areas were stranded after an embankment along the Dead Animal River collapsed amid a sudden surge of tidal water.
According to upazila administration sources, steps have also been taken to repair the damaged embankment immediately and rebuild it on a sustainable basis. The repair and reconstruction work is scheduled to begin next Wednesday.
