The accident occurred around noon at the Mawa end of the expressway, on the ramp of the Padma Bridge. Mohammad Akter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Padma Bridge North Police Station, confirmed that the accident happened when the bus lost control and overturned while descending from the bridge. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation, but initial reports suggest that high speed played a significant role.
The Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, a vital route connecting Dhaka to the southern regions of Bangladesh, has seen several accidents in the past, often attributed to speeding and driver error. The Padma Bridge, a critical infrastructure project, has significantly reduced travel time between Dhaka and the south, but safety concerns remain a persistent issue.
Road safety in Bangladesh is a major concern, with thousands of accidents occurring annually. The government has implemented various measures to improve road safety, including speed limits, regular vehicle inspections, and public awareness campaigns. However, enforcement and adherence to these safety measures remain inconsistent.
This latest accident underscores the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater awareness among drivers about the dangers of speeding. Improved road infrastructure and regular maintenance are also crucial to preventing such incidents in the future.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring road safety in Bangladesh. As the country continues to develop its infrastructure, balancing rapid progress with safety measures will be essential to protect the lives of commuters.
