Venezuela's deposed leader Nicolas Maduro has shared photographs from his detention center in Brooklyn, New York, stating that he and his wife, Cilia Flores, are 'standing firm' despite their incarceration. The photos, posted on the Telegram messaging service, show Maduro in a gray tracksuit, making peace signs. Although the images were posted on Sunday, camera data suggests they were taken on June 25, following the devastating earthquakes in northern Venezuela. Maduro and Flores were captured in Caracas during a US military operation in January and are being held on drug trafficking and firearms possession charges, which they deny.

Message of Resilience

In his message, Maduro addressed his grandchildren, children, and supporters, expressing his gratitude for their love and support. 'I want you to know that we are standing firm, with our hearts full of your love,' he wrote. He concluded with a message of faith and hope: 'We will remain strong, calm and confident: God is with us. God will provide. Venezuela will rise again.'

Detention and Trial

Maduro and his wife are detained in a facility in Brooklyn, New York. They do not have access to newspapers or the internet but are allowed limited telephone contact with their family and lawyers. Their trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027, in a federal court in New York. Maduro's son, Nicolas Maduro Guerra, has stated that his father is in good condition and spends his time studying the Bible.

Political Context

The message from Maduro comes two days after interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced a significant oil agreement with the United States, allowing US operations in Venezuelan oil fields. Rodriguez, who is governing under pressure from Washington, has chosen a diplomatic approach with the US, aiming to turn Venezuela into an 'energy powerhouse.' This development underscores the complex political landscape in Venezuela, with Maduro's detention and the new oil agreement highlighting the ongoing tensions and shifts in power.
