German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt would face 'considerable damage' if the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) forms a government there. This warning comes just a week before the state assembly election, where the AfD currently leads in opinion polls with a potential majority.
In an interview with the ARD broadcaster, Merz expressed concerns that international investors might be deterred from establishing new factories in the region if the AfD were to gain power. He emphasized that the decision ultimately lies with the voters but highlighted the potential negative impact on the region's economy and governability.
Currently, Saxony-Anhalt is governed by a coalition of Merz's centre-right CDU, the centre-left Social Democrats (SDP), and the liberal FDP. Merz stated that his party would intensify its efforts in the final week of campaigning to prevent an AfD government, acknowledging the challenging conditions his party faces in the state.
A recent poll indicated that the CDU is at 23 percent, while the AfD stands at 40 percent among voters in Saxony-Anhalt. If the AfD were to take power, it would mark the party's first state-level government and grant it significant authority in areas such as health, education, and security policy.
This development would also be a significant setback for Merz, who assumed office with a promise to diminish the AfD's influence through stricter immigration policies and economic revitalization. Despite his efforts, the AfD has maintained a steady lead at the national level, while Merz's own poll ratings and those of his CDU/CSU alliance have declined.
Other political parties in Germany have maintained a 'firewall' against cooperating with the AfD. In the event the AfD does not secure an outright majority, the CDU might seek to form a coalition with parties to its left, such as the SPD and the Greens. However, this would likely require the support of the far-left Linke party, with whom the CDU has pledged not to cooperate.
The outcome of the Saxony-Anhalt election is significant not only for Germany but also for understanding the broader political dynamics within the country. For Bangladesh, observing the rise of far-right movements in Europe provides valuable insights into global political trends and their potential impacts on international relations and economic partnerships.
