Argentine groups have announced a lawsuit to halt a British-Israeli oil project off the coast of the disputed Falkland Islands. The lawsuit comes amid heightened tensions over the long-standing territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The project, known as the Sea Lion oil field, involves Britain's Rockhopper Exploration and Israel's Navitas Petroleum, who aim to establish a large-scale oil operation approximately 220 kilometers (137 miles) from the Falklands.
Legal and Political Tensions
The plaintiffs, which include war veterans and environmental lawyers, argue that the project violates a United Nations resolution stating that unilateral actions must be avoided while a territorial dispute is ongoing. Although the project is being carried out in a British-controlled area, the plaintiffs believe that a decision by local courts could affect its progress. The complaint seeks to ensure that the companies'refrain from starting and/or continuing the works... as well as from initiating the extraction and exploitation of hydrocarbons,' according to lawyer Enrique Viale.

The Falklands, known as Las Malvinas in Argentina, have been a point of contention since Argentina unsuccessfully attempted to wrest control from Britain in 1982. The war left 649 Argentines, 255 Britons, and three islanders dead. Argentina's far-right President Javier Milei has pledged to speak on the 'SACRED issue for Argentines: the Malvinas cause' in a televised address. Milei welcomed Trump's comments, indicating a potential shift in international stances on the issue.
