As twilight settled on a hillside by the river near the eastern Ukrainian front, two soldiers exchanged wedding vows during a Slavic ritual honoring ancestors and fallen warriors. The 30-year-old groom, known by the callsign Ice, and the 32-year-old bride, Khomochka, were escorted through the woods to the altar by fellow soldiers who formed a guard of honour. The ceremony, known as 'Mysteriya,' is a blend of pagan Slavic traditions and Orthodox Christianity, revived by the Azov brigade as a formal ceremonial framework for the unit's significant moments.
Branches were draped with colorful ribbons and ritual wreaths, while bonfires blazed high, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for the military brotherhood to gather. Despite the ongoing war, the couple saw the ceremony as a solemn and meaningful event, more significant than their legal marriage a year prior. 'Such is our word, such is our oath. I swear!' they declared to the assembly, with their friends and brothers-in-arms loudly proclaiming their acceptance of the oath.
The couple's daily reality is one of manpower shortages, Russian offensives, lack of leave, dangerous rotations to the front lines, and the reports of their friends' deaths. Khomochka, who manages the unit's medical service, carries the heavy load of trying to save the wounded. 'She's unstoppable, like a live wire,' said Ice, whose blue eyes—which gave him his call-sign—warmed up when he looked at his wife.
'If we don't live here and now, then when should we live, when we are in a state of war?' Khomochka said, reflecting the sentiment shared by many soldiers who find moments of peace and joy especially valuable amid the ongoing conflict. Dmytro Rogoziuk, the commander of the 60th Brigade, echoed this sentiment, stating, 'Events like this show that not everything ends with war—that life goes on.'
The 'Mysteriya' ritual serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and spirit of the Ukrainian soldiers, who continue to find moments of celebration and connection even in the midst of war. It underscores the importance of tradition and community in providing solace and strength during challenging times.
