Lebanese authorities have accused Israeli troops of constructing an earthen barrier in the village of Zawtar al-Gharbiya, which is under Lebanese military control. The village is one of two designated 'pilot zones' where the Lebanese army is to take over as part of a US-sponsored agreement. The barrier was built overnight, according to local mayor Abed Ezzeddine, who expressed surprise at the sudden construction.
Background on the Agreement
The US-sponsored framework agreement, signed in June, was aimed at resolving tensions between Lebanon and Israel following a period of conflict. Under the terms of the agreement, Lebanon is meant to disarm Hezbollah, while Israel is supposed to gradually withdraw its forces. The village of Zawtar al-Gharbiya was one of the areas where the Lebanese army took control on July 21, with around 50 families returning since then.
Current Tensions
Despite the ceasefire in place since June, tensions remain high. Hezbollah, which rejects the deal, refuses to surrender its weapons, and Israel still carries out intermittent strikes on southern Lebanon. The latest incident involving the barrier has been confirmed by a Lebanese military source, who described it as a violation of the framework agreement.
The construction of the barrier comes as Lebanon and Israel completed their seventh round of direct negotiations in Rome, with the Israelis reportedly refusing to discuss further withdrawals before ensuring Beirut's full control over the pilot zones. Hezbollah's stance and Israel's actions continue to pose challenges to the peace process.
