Early this morning, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 conducted a raid in Rashidpur village under Mithapukur police station in Rangpur district, recovering 17 rounds of abandoned bullets and cartridges from the bank of a pond. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the RAB-13's Crime Prevention Specialised Company (CPSC) executed the raid at 1:40 am. The recovered ammunition includes eight rounds of lead-ball shotgun cartridges, eight rounds of rubber shotgun cartridges, and one round of live 7.62mm rifle ammunition, as stated in a RAB-13 press release.
The seized bullets and cartridges were promptly handed over to Mithapukur police station based on a general diary (GD) filed for further legal action. The discovery underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb illegal arms and ammunition circulation within the region.
The Rapid Action Battalion, often abbreviated as RAB, is a specialised anti-crime and anti-terrorism unit in Bangladesh. Established in 2004, RAB has been instrumental in conducting operations against criminal activities, including arms smuggling, drug trafficking, and other serious offenses. The RAB-13, specifically, operates in the Rangpur division, focusing on maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.
The recovery of such ammunition is significant as it prevents potential misuse by criminal elements. Abandoned bullets and cartridges, if left unchecked, could fall into the wrong hands, leading to increased violence and security threats. The prompt action by RAB-13 in this instance highlights the importance of community tips and intelligence-driven operations in combating illegal arms proliferation.
This incident also reflects the broader challenges faced by law enforcement in Bangladesh regarding the circulation of illegal arms. Despite stringent laws and continuous efforts by agencies like RAB, the illicit trade of weapons persists, driven by various factors including demand from criminal networks and porous borders. The successful recovery in Rangpur is a reminder of the persistent vigilance required to address these issues effectively.
