A fish release programme was held at Hussein Nagar Ghat on the Ghagot riverbank in Rangpur to mark the 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The event was organised by Rangpur Metropolitan Jatiyatabadi Matsyajeebi Dal on Saturday.

Metropolitan BNP Senior Joint Convener Shahidul Islam Mizu attended the programme as the chief guest. Metropolitan Jatiyatabadi Matsyajeebi Dal Member-secretary Md Ariful Islam Arif presided over the event. Former acting member-secretaries of Rangpur Metropolitan BNP Md Abdus Salam and Md Selim Chowdhury, and incumbent joint convener of Rangpur District Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal Muntaseer Mamun Munna, addressed the programme as special guests.

Speaking on the occasion, the leaders called for proper use of existing water bodies to increase fish production and meet the nutritional needs of people. Chief guest Shahidul Islam Mizu stressed protecting natural fish breeding grounds, conserving endangered and native fish species and preventing destructive fishing practices to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production.

He said, 'The government has given due importance to meeting the nutritional needs of the people and building a healthy nation by increasing the production of fish, meat, milk and eggs across the country.' The fish release event is part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices and enhance fish production in the region.

Fish is a crucial part of the Bangladeshi diet, providing essential proteins and nutrients. The country has a rich tradition of fish farming and fishing, with numerous rivers, ponds, and water bodies supporting diverse fish species. Sustainable fish production is vital for food security and the livelihoods of many communities.

The BNP, one of the major political parties in Bangladesh, has historically focused on agricultural and rural development. Events like the fish release programme reflect the party's commitment to supporting the fishing community and promoting sustainable practices. The anniversary celebrations also serve to strengthen the party's presence and influence in the region.
