In the heart of Satkhira, along the Satkhira-Khulna highway in Patkelghata, the bustling activities of boat craftsmen reveal a thriving industry. About 150 skilled workers are engaged in various stages of boat production, from cutting wood and setting structures to applying tar to the hulls. This vibrant scene underscores the growing demand for Satkhira-made boats, which are renowned for their quality and diversification.

The boat-making industry in Satkhira has become a significant economic venture, with over 2,000 boats sold annually across the country. The monsoon season, which floods vast coastal areas for more than six months a year, highlights the crucial role of boats in communication and transportation. Consequently, the demand for boats remains high, with Satkhira meeting both local needs and supplying various districts.

Boats produced in Satkhira are crafted from high-quality woods such as Khoi, Mahogany, Chambal, and Eplipli. The craftsmen manufacture a variety of boats, with higher demand for Dingi, fishing boats, Taburi boats, and Kheya boats. Despite the year-round production, the demand and value of these boats surge during the monsoon season.

Anwar Hossain, owner of Messrs Aishi Boat Workshop, has been in the business for about 30 years, inheriting the profession from his forefathers. His workshop employs about 25 workers, reflecting the industry's capacity to provide jobs. However, the rising costs of materials and labor have squeezed profit margins. Hossain notes that while the selling price of a boat can range from Taka 10,000 to several lakhs depending on size and quality, the profit per sale is often only Taka 2,000 to 3,000.

Gourab Das, the Deputy Manager of Satkhira BSCIC Industrial City, has assured the boat-making artisans of continued cooperation and potential financial assistance. The BSCIC has inspected various boat manufacturing sites and some factories are registered with them. This support aims to further bolster the industry, ensuring its sustainability and growth.
