The 55th martyrdom anniversary of Bir Shreshtha Lance Naik Noor Mohammad Sheikh, one of Bangladesh's seven highest gallantry awardees, was observed nationwide with various programmes and tributes. Noor Mohammad, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1971 Liberation War, is remembered for his exceptional courage and heroism.

Tributes in Narail and Jashore

In Narail, the district administration and Bir Shreshtha Noor Mohammad Sheikh Trust organized events at Noor Mohammad Nagar in Chandibarpur Union of Narail Sadar upazila. The day began with wreath-laying at Noor Mohammad's portrait, followed by a guard of honour, Quran-khani, doa mahfil, and competitions at the Noor Mohammad Sheikh Memorial Museum and Library.

In Jashore, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) paid homage at Noor Mohammad's grave near Kashipur Border Outpost in Sharsha upazila. A guard of honour, Fateha, and special munajat were conducted, with tabarruk distributed among attendees. Family members, local representatives, journalists, and residents participated in the ceremony.

Life and Sacrifice of Noor Mohammad

Born on February 26, 1936, in Mahishkhola village, Noor Mohammad joined the East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) on March 14, 1959. He served along the Dinajpur border before being transferred to the Jashore sector in 1970. During the Liberation War, he fought under Sector No. 8 in the Jashore region, showcasing extraordinary bravery.

On September 5, 1971, during a battle at Goalhati and Chutipur in Jashore, Noor Mohammad advanced towards the enemy while carrying an injured comrade and firing his light machine gun. Despite sustaining severe injuries, he continued fighting until his martyrdom. His bravery earned him the Bir Shreshtha award posthumously.
