A police constable was killed and 10 others, including five police personnel, were injured when a police pickup carrying four arrestees overturned and fell into a roadside ditch in Matherbazar area of Sadar upazila in Madaripur today. The deceased was identified as police constable Abdus Salam, 51, who was serving at the Bhadrasan Police Investigation Centre in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur.
The accident occurred around 2.30 pm on the Madaripur-Shariatpur road. According to eyewitnesses, a child suddenly came onto the road while crossing it. In an attempt to save the child, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and fall into a roadside ditch. Constable Abdus Salam, who was inside the pickup, died on the spot.
Injured and Medical Response
Five police personnel and four pedestrians were injured in the accident. The injured were rescued and taken to the 250-bed Madaripur District Hospital. After receiving primary treatment, four critically injured police personnel were referred to Dhaka for better treatment. Madaripur Additional Superintendent of Police Faria Rafiq Bhavna confirmed the incident and expressed deep regret over the unfortunate event.
