On July Uprising Day 2026, Khulna City Corporation (KCC) honored the historic student-led movement that led to the fall of an authoritarian regime. The KCC organized a series of events, including discussions, tribute ceremonies, cultural competitions, and a prize-giving ceremony, emphasizing the significance of the uprising in establishing a democratic and discrimination-free society.
KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju highlighted that the July movement, which started as a protest against the quota system and discrimination, evolved into a mass uprising that resulted in significant political change. He noted that August 5 remains a pivotal day in Bangladesh's history, marked by the sacrifices of hundreds of students, workers, and citizens from various backgrounds.
Manju stated that the aspirations of the uprising participants should be fulfilled by rebuilding the country's economy and establishing a new social order. He also acknowledged the government's efforts towards these goals. The observance included drawing competitions for primary school students and essay competitions for secondary school students, with prizes awarded at the city hall.
The city was adorned with national flags and display panels featuring photographs from the July movement. Special prayers were offered for those who lost their lives during the uprising. The event was chaired by KCC Chief Executive Officer Rajib Ahmed, with notable attendees including Chief Engineer Mashiuzzaman Khan, Secretary Md. Reza Rashid, and Chief Revenue Officer Rahima Sultana Bushra.
Family members of martyr Sheikh Md. Sakib Raihan, KCC officials, ward representatives, and distinguished citizens participated in the event. Raihan's father, Md. Azizur Rahman, shared memories of his son during the program. The commemoration underscored the importance of the July Uprising in shaping Bangladesh's political landscape and driving the nation towards a more equitable society.
