Myanmar's leader, Min Aung Hlaing, departed for Russia on Monday, marking his first visit to Moscow since becoming civilian president. The trip aims to consolidate the longstanding friendly and close relations between Myanmar and Russia, and to enhance strategic cooperation, particularly in security and the economy, according to a statement from the Myanmar presidency. Min Aung Hlaing, who was installed as Myanmar's president in April following stage-managed elections dismissed as a sham by Western nations and democracy watchdogs, is accompanied by senior officials.

Russia has been one of the few countries to back Myanmar after the 2021 military coup that ousted the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, triggering a civil war estimated to have killed more than 100,000 people. The Myanmar military uses Russian-made jets against rebel factions and is also accused of targeting civilians, in attacks some conflict monitors say amount to war crimes.

During his visit, Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to meet with Russia's prime minister, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, and attend a Myanmar-Russia economic forum. This visit follows a five-year military cooperation pact signed between Myanmar and Russia in February, although details of the agreement remain scarce.

Since assuming the presidency, Min Aung Hlaing has made several trips overseas, including to China, India, and neighboring Thailand, as he seeks to bring his pariah state back into the international fold. The Myanmar leader's visit to Russia underscores the importance of maintaining strong ties with nations that have supported his regime amidst international condemnation.

The Myanmar military's use of Russian-made jets against rebel factions and civilians has drawn international criticism. Despite this, Russia continues to provide military and economic support to Myanmar, highlighting the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region. As Min Aung Hlaing seeks to strengthen ties with Russia, the international community watches closely, concerned about the implications for regional stability and human rights.
