Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam has called for making nuclear science and technology one of the key foundations for Bangladesh's development. Speaking at a discussion meeting organized by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Scientists Association (BAESA), the minister highlighted the vast potential of nuclear technology in various sectors including food security, agriculture, healthcare, cancer treatment, industry, and human resource development.

Utilizing Skilled Talent

The minister noted that the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) is home to a large number of skilled scientists and PhD researchers. He stressed the need to properly utilize their talent and research-based knowledge to play a more effective role in the country's development. Initiatives will be taken to address the problems faced by scientists and researchers after reviewing them on a priority basis.

Future Prospects and Safety

Regarding the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, Mahbub Anam assured that the project will be commissioned only after completing necessary tests and ensuring safety and international standards. He also mentioned that Bangladesh is considering the potential of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology, but future decisions will be made only after a thorough assessment of safety, technological capability, and economic potential.

The minister urged science journalists to publish responsible and fact-based reports, emphasizing the importance of verifying information from concerned scientists and experts before publishing news on nuclear projects.

In his speech, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology Rehan Asif Asad highlighted the importance of nuclear medicine and called for expanding the use of nuclear technology in the medical sector. He stressed the need to enhance the capacity and service coverage of the BAEC and ensure fair professional opportunities and facilities for scientists and researchers.

Science and Technology Secretary Md Anwar Hossain emphasized maximizing the existing talent, expertise, and technological capacity of the BAEC to expand the scope of research, innovation, and public services. Dr A S M Saifullah, Director General of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) and President of BAESA, presented a paper on strengthening the institutional and practical capacity of the BAEC.
