Researcher Kathryn Ayres noted that orcas often tear apart prey and share it with other members of the group, including calves and juveniles. Mark Peter Simmonds, director of science at OceanCare, compared the behavior to human formal meals where socializing and nutrition are in play. Killer whales have been documented engaging in various playful and sophisticated behaviors, such as 'wave washing' to capture seals and using seaweed as tools for grooming.

The study highlights the complex and intelligent nature of orcas. Rebecca Wellard, a scientist at Western Australia's Curtin University, hopes the findings will increase respect for these creatures. The research was conducted off the Gulf of California in 2024 and 2025.
