BRAC University celebrated Chinese Culture Day 2026 with a variety of events held at its Merul Badda campus in Dhaka. Organized by the BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL) in collaboration with the BRAC University Communication and Language Club, the event aimed to foster intercultural dialogue, strengthen global connections, and highlight the diversity within the university's academic community.
Li Shaopeng, cultural counsellor at the Embassy of China in Bangladesh, attended the event as a guest of honor. He emphasized the importance of the celebration in deepening mutual understanding and advancing a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future.
BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar spoke about the long history of academic exchanges between Bangladesh and China, dating back to the 11th century with the visit of Bengali Buddhist teacher Atish Dipankar Srigyan to China. He also highlighted the university's strong ties with China, noting that the Merul Badda campus was built by a joint venture between China's Beijing Urban Construction Group and Bangladeshi contractor Associated Builders Corporation Ltd.
BRAC University Treasurer Ariful Islam announced the establishment of a Bangladesh-China Center for Language, Culture and Research at BRAC University, following recent visits and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Anhui Normal University in China. He also mentioned the plan to establish a Bangladesh Culture Cell at Anhui Normal University, based on mutual vision of equity and reciprocity.
Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, adviser to BIL, and Professor Shaila Sultana, director of BIL, also spoke at the event. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including BRAC University Registrar Dr David Dowland, Huang Moucong and Xia Daojing, second and third secretaries of the cultural section of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, Yang Hui, Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Dhaka, Ma Xiaoyan, Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at North South University, and Khairul Basher, director of the Office of Communications.
The celebration of Chinese Culture Day at BRAC University not only highlights the strong academic and cultural ties between Bangladesh and China but also underscores the importance of intercultural dialogue in fostering global understanding and cooperation.
