In a recent escalation of hostilities, Ukrainian missile strikes killed six people and wounded four others, including a child, in Russia's Belgorod region, according to the acting governor. The attack targeted the village of Koloskovo, located approximately 15 kilometers from the Ukraine border. This incident follows a series of missile and drone strikes carried out by both nations, leading to a significant rise in civilian casualties.

Belgorod acting governor Alexander Shuvaev reported that the village of Koloskovo was attacked by Ukrainian missiles, resulting in the destruction of a structure and damage to a vehicle. This attack comes on the heels of missile and drone strikes by both Russia and Ukraine that killed 19 people on both sides just a day prior. The ongoing conflict has seen a surge in missile attacks, pushing the civilian death toll to its highest levels since the war began in 2022.

Moscow has been conducting near-daily missile and drone strikes across Ukraine since the full-scale invasion in early 2022. Recently, Russia has intensified its attacks using hard-to-intercept ballistic missiles, taking advantage of Ukraine's air-defense shortages due to the diversion of supplies caused by the US-Israeli war against Iran. In response, Ukraine has increasingly targeted warehouses belonging to Russia's largest online retailer, Wildberries, alleging that the company supplies components for Russian drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that these strikes, along with attacks on oil refineries, are aimed at undermining Russia's war economy. The United Nations reported that in July alone, 437 civilians were killed in Ukraine, the highest monthly toll since May 2022. Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported 79 civilian deaths on their side in July, up from the previous month. The relentless missile exchanges between the two nations underscore the deepening humanitarian crisis and the escalating nature of the conflict.

The recent surge in missile attacks highlights the deteriorating situation in the region, with both sides employing increasingly aggressive tactics. The civilian death toll continues to rise as the frontline fighting remains at a near standstill and diplomatic efforts are frozen. The international community watches closely as the conflict shows no signs of abating, with each side seeking to gain the upper hand through intensified missile strikes.
