In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian defence ministry reported that its air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed 605 Ukrainian drones during the night. The incidents occurred over Russian territory and the annexed Crimean Peninsula, underscoring the intensity of the aerial confrontation.
Damage and Casualties
The attacks were not limited to military targets. In the Tver region, approximately 180 kilometers northwest of Moscow, the facade of a logistics centre belonging to the popular online retailer Wildberries was slightly damaged by drone debris. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Wildberries, often referred to as Russia's Amazon, has been a frequent target of Ukrainian strikes since mid-July.
Mikhail Yevrayev, the governor of the Yaroslavl region, approximately 250 kilometers north of Moscow, described the attack on his region as the 'most massive'. He reported that 92 drones were shot down, causing fires in houses and damaging cars.
Conflict Context
This drone assault comes more than four years into Russia's large-scale offensive against Ukraine. Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have stalled, leading both nations to intensify their long-range strikes.
