The Election Commission (EC) has announced that all preparations are complete for tomorrow's historic presidential election in Bangladesh. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin assured journalists today that there are no gaps in their preparations and that they are receiving full cooperation from all involved parties. "We’ve completed all the preparations required for the presidential election. There is no shortfall in our preparations. We are receiving cooperation from everyone involved in the election and believe that we will be able to conduct a beautiful presidential election," CEC Uddin stated. "The world is watching the presidential election being held in Bangladesh. So, this is a historic moment. This is a matter of fortune for me."
The election will involve 349 voters, including the President, Prime Minister, Speaker, and Leader of the Opposition. Voting will take place from 2 pm to 5 pm. The Chief Election Officer highlighted that this is the first presidential election since 1991, and noted that even those working at the Parliament Secretariat are not accustomed to conducting this type of activity. However, all necessary drills have been carried out to ensure a seamless process.
Under the 1991 law, the Presidential Election Rules are in place, and the election process can be divided into several stages. The voting procedure will differ based on whether the National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad) is in session or not. Since the Parliament is currently not in session, a special meeting will be called for the election, where Members of Parliament will cast their votes.
For transparency, the voting of the President, Prime Minister, Speaker, and Leader of the Opposition will be telecast live, likely through Bangladesh Television (BTV). Vote counting will also be live telecast, and parliament members will be allowed to be present during the counting process. After the counting, the CEC will announce the name of the winner, and an official gazette will be published.
This presidential election marks a significant moment for Bangladesh, as it is the first of its kind in over three decades. The smooth conduct of this election is crucial not only for the democratic process but also for the country's international standing. The EC's thorough preparations and commitment to transparency aim to ensure that this historic event is conducted fairly and efficiently.
