In a bid to honor the memory of Bir Sreshtho Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir and to revive volleyball in the region, a grand volleyball tournament titled 'Bir Sreshtho Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir Volleyball Tournament' will be held in Rajshahi in November. Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu announced the tentative dates for the tournament as November 21-27 during a preparatory meeting held at the conference room of Rajshahi Circuit House.
The tournament aims to bring together top volleyball teams from across Bangladesh. Participating teams are expected to include Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the Dhaka Premier League champions, and the Rajshahi Divisional League champions. This prestigious event not only pays tribute to a national hero but also seeks to promote volleyball at a competitive level.
In addition to the men's division, a special women's match will be organized between the Rajshahi District Women's Volleyball Team and the Bangladesh champion Police Women's Volleyball Team. This initiative is designed to promote women's volleyball in the region and provide a platform for female athletes to showcase their talents.
Minister Minu emphasized the importance of such sporting events in building a healthy, clean, and peaceful society. By engaging young people in sports, these events aim to keep them away from drug addiction, gambling, and immoral activities. He also mentioned that the tournament will be held at the grounds of different educational institutions in Rajshahi, fostering a community-driven approach to sports.
An indoor stadium is currently being constructed under an initiative of Rajshahi City Corporation to promote volleyball and other sports in the city. The minister assured that technical and finance committees will be formed to conduct the tournament smoothly. The estimated budget for the event has been set at Tk 12-14 lakh, which will be financed entirely through the organizers' own funds and corporate sponsorships. No subscription or donation will be collected from the general public for the tournament.
