In an effort to promote child wellness and raise parental awareness, Rajshahi recently hosted a 'Healthy Baby' competition. This event, organized by World Vision Bangladesh Rajshahi City ADP, focused on the physical growth, nutrition, and health-related knowledge of children under five years of age and their guardians. Held at the City Church Hall Room, the competition emphasized the critical role of nutrition, vaccination, and regular health check-ups in ensuring a child's healthy development.
Key Components of Child Health
The competition evaluated several key components essential for a child's healthy growth. These included exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by the introduction of nutritious food. From six to eight months, children were expected to receive nutritious food twice a day along with breast milk, increasing to three times a day from nine to 11 months, and finally, three full bowls of food daily from 12 to 23 months. Additionally, the competition assessed the arrangement of soap and water for handwashing and the knowledge of where to seek treatment if the child fell ill.
Expert Insights and Community Impact
Rajshahi Civil Surgeon Dr. SIM Raziul Karim, the chief guest at the event, stressed the importance of nutrition, vaccination, and regular health monitoring from birth. He highlighted the necessity of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and balanced, nutritious food thereafter for normal child development. Senior Manager of World Vision Bangladesh Rajshahi, Lotus Chisim, emphasized the role of nutrition, cleanliness, and regular health monitoring in child well-being, alongside the importance of mother's knowledge and family awareness in child care. The competition aimed to encourage parents to acquire practical health and nutrition knowledge.
The event saw a significant participation, with 8,000 children initially taking part. After an initial screening, 1,200 children were selected for final evaluation, from which 180 were chosen, with 18 receiving special prizes and 162 receiving general prizes. Parents like Swapna Khatun and Supta Akhter shared their experiences, noting the valuable insights gained about child nutrition and care through their participation in the competition. These events not only raise awareness but also foster a supportive environment for children to grow up healthily.
