In a landmark ruling, a court in Tangail has sentenced a man to death for the murder of his wife in 2019. The court found Shahinur Rahman, 37, guilty of killing Swapna, his wife of 15 years, after an argument escalated into violence on the morning of October 5, 2019.
The Incident
Shahinur Rahman, a resident of Basail upazila, had a troubled marriage with Swapna. The couple's frequent quarrels culminated in a fatal confrontation. On the morning of October 5, 2019, an argument between Shahinur and Swapna turned violent, resulting in serious injuries to Swapna. Shahinur fled the scene, leaving Swapna to be taken to Tangail General Hospital by locals, where she was declared dead by the attending physician.
Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, Swapna's father, Mannan Mia, filed a case with the Basail Police Station. The case was brought to court, where it was examined with the statements of 13 witnesses. The court found Shahinur guilty of the murder and sentenced him to death. Additionally, he was fined Taka 100,000.
Court's Verdict
Senior District and Sessions Judge Hafizur Rahman delivered the verdict at noon. The court's decision was confirmed by Tangail Court Inspector Azharul Islam, who stated that Shahinur was present in court when the judgment was pronounced. He was subsequently sent to jail.
