In a significant move to combat the escalating effects of climate change, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon inaugurated a 15-day divisional tree plantation campaign and tree fair in Barishal today. The fair, held at the city's Bell’s Park ground, aims to plant five crore saplings annually, contributing to a larger plan to plant 25 crore trees across Bangladesh in the next five years.

During the opening ceremony, Swapon highlighted the urgent need for global and coordinated efforts to address climate change, particularly for the coastal regions. He underscored the importance of using environment-friendly fuels to mitigate the risks posed by climate change.

The minister reiterated the government's commitment to environmental protection, pointing to the mega plan to plant 25 crore trees as a testament to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s vision. He emphasized that the government does not support cheap development at the expense of the environment.

Barishal Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abu Raihan Muhammad Saleh, and Divisional Forest Officer Mohammad Rafiqul Islam were among the dignitaries who spoke at the event. The fair, organized by 50 nurseries from various districts of Barishal, will be open to the public daily from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Students, civil society representatives, and local residents participated in the event. After the inauguration, Swapon visited the 50 stalls and nurseries participating in the fair, showcasing the diverse range of saplings available for planting.

This tree fair is part of a broader national initiative to enhance green cover and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. The government's proactive approach aims to foster a sustainable environment for future generations.
