In Palangkaraya, Indonesia, a teenage boy named Rudiyansah has become a symbol of hope and resilience in the fight against wildfires ravaging Borneo. Dressed in his red and blue Superman costume, Rudiyansah has been volunteering with his father's firefighting group since 2023. This year, he decided to don the iconic superhero attire while battling the flames, creating a striking image that has gone viral and earned him the title of 'forest hero' from the country's forestry minister.

A Superhero in the Fireline

Rudiyansah, 17, told AFP that dressing as Superman was 'just for fun,' but his efforts have drawn significant attention to the struggle to contain the wildfires. Despite the exhausting and dangerous work, he finds joy in helping locals. 'Honestly, I'm really happy because I can help locals, even though it feels really tiring,' he said. Rudiyansah ensures his costume is slightly wet before heading into the fields to prevent it from burning and washes it every night to keep it clean.

The Battle Against the Blazes

This year's fire season has been particularly severe, with the haze being the worst his father's volunteer group has seen since its establishment in 2020. Mulyadi, Rudiyansah's father, highlighted that the lack of water is the main challenge for firefighters, as wells and other water sources have dried up during the drought. The government reports that fires between January and July have burned more than 200,000 hectares of land—an area three times the size of Jakarta.

The current wildfires are exacerbated by the El Niño weather pattern, which brings drought conditions and increases the risk of wildfires. Human-caused climate change further amplifies these impacts, making extreme weather events more severe. The government has responded by deploying more troops and aircraft to help contain the spread of the blazes and the resulting smog, which has reached neighboring Malaysia.

Rudiyansah, who dreams of becoming a forest ranger, called on volunteers and firefighters across Indonesia to keep up the spirit in the fight against the flames. His actions and message resonate deeply, highlighting the critical need for continued efforts to combat the devastating wildfires.
