A fresh wildfire erupted on Monday morning southeast of Athens, intensifying Greece's ongoing battle against wildfires. The fire, located in Kouvaras, 60 kilometers southeast of the capital in the Attica region, is being fought by 172 firefighters, 40 vehicles, two water-bombing aircraft, and four helicopters. This new fire comes just 10 days after another blaze northwest of Athens, which devastated over 11,000 hectares of forests and farmland.
Impact and Response
Civil protection authorities have ordered the evacuation of Agios Stylianos, a village near Kouvaras. The winds, reaching speeds of over 70 km/h, are complicating firefighting efforts. The previous fire, which took five days to bring under control due to gusts of up to 130 km/h, resulted in the tragic deaths of two helicopter crew members in a mid-air collision.
Greece has been grappling with increasingly frequent and intense wildfires, a situation linked to climate change by scientists. Experts have noted that Attica, where Athens is located, faces a heightened fire risk. From 2017 to 2026, 42 percent of the total forest area in the region was burned due to 15 major fires.
