Three more children have died from suspected measles across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while 902 new measles cases were reported during the same period, according to a press release issued today by the Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Rising Numbers
The number of suspected measles patients recorded in the last 24 hours stood at 796, while the total number of suspected measles cases from March 15 to July 8 reached 108,180. During the same period, 106 confirmed measles cases were recorded, bringing the total number of confirmed measles cases from March 15 to July 8 to 13,070.
Hospital Admissions and Recoveries
Since March 15, a total of 91,270 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals. During the same period, 87,628 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals.
Death Toll
The release said three deaths from suspected measles were reported in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of deaths of children from suspected measles to 652 from March 15 to July 8. The total number of deaths from confirmed measles since March 15 remains at 93.
Why This Matters
The ongoing measles outbreak poses a significant public health challenge in Bangladesh. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can lead to severe complications, especially in children. The rising number of cases and deaths underscores the need for urgent public health interventions, including vaccination campaigns and public awareness programs.
Next Steps
Health authorities are likely to intensify their efforts to control the outbreak. This may include increasing vaccination coverage, particularly in high-risk areas, and ensuring that healthcare facilities are well-equipped to handle the influx of patients. Public education campaigns will also be crucial in informing communities about the importance of vaccination and the symptoms of measles.
