Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has stated that increased Chinese investment in Bangladesh would help reduce the country's trade deficit with China. Speaking to journalists after a reception for new members of the Sylhet District Bar Association, he emphasized the importance of attracting more Chinese investment to make better use of the duty-free access granted for all Bangladeshi products.
Strategic Investment and Industrial Parks
Muktadir highlighted the government's strategy to attract more Chinese investment, noting that increased investment would lead to higher production in Bangladesh, greater exports, and a reduced trade deficit. He mentioned the decision to establish an 800-acre Chinese industrial park in Chattogram, which is expected to boost Chinese investment, industrialization, and employment.
Prime Minister's Visit and Future Prospects
Referring to the Prime Minister's recent visit to China, Muktadir said that discussions with top Chinese leaders and investors are expected to result in significant investment inflows. He also pointed out that linking Bangladesh with the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor could allow goods to be transported to China by truck within 24 hours, further enhancing trade opportunities.
Legal Sector Developments
On the legal sector, the minister emphasized the role of lawyers in upholding justice and constitutional rights. He called for unity and professional development within the legal community, stressing the need for modern training, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI), legal research, and courtroom skills, to build a more capable legal workforce. Muktadir also mentioned that a new law with strict penalties to curb online gambling has been placed in parliament and is expected to be passed soon. Additionally, initiatives are underway to establish special tribunals for faster disposal of drug-related cases.
Call for Collective Efforts
The minister urged collective efforts from the government, judiciary, and legal professionals to ensure justice, rule of law, and national development. The event was attended by senior judicial officials, Bar Association leaders, and local dignitaries.
