Mohammad Amzad, a well-known butcher from Karwan Bazar, plans to butcher 10 cows for this Eid. Last year, he butchered 14 cows. Amzad, who runs 'Amzad Enterprise,' usually butchers one cow daily and sells the meat before afternoon. This Eid, he will be assisted by a team of six, including three professionals and three assistants.
Amzad, originally from Sonargaon, Narayanganj, came to Dhaka at a young age and learned the butchering trade from his uncle. He now has his own shop in Karwan Bazar and employs six people. Despite the physical demands, Amzad enjoys the skill and precision required in butchering, which he believes not everyone can master.
During Eid, Amzad and his team visit various households in Dhaka to butcher and prepare meat. He starts his day early, often participating in Eid prayers before beginning the day's work. The fees for butchering vary depending on the time of day, with higher rates in the morning due to higher demand.
Amzad does not wish for his children to follow in his footsteps, encouraging them to pursue different careers. After a busy Eid, he returns home the next day to butcher his own sacrificial animal.
