In the early hours of the morning, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officers arrested Md. Faruk, a 30-year-old man, on suspicion of smuggling gold. The arrest took place on the Jashore-Benapole highway. Faruk was caught with five gold bars, collectively weighing 529.64 grams and valued at around Taka 1.10 crore, which he had hidden on his person. The apprehension was part of a targeted operation initiated by the BGB-49 Battalion, Jashore, based on confidential intelligence.
Lieutenant Colonel Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan, Commanding Officer of the Jashore BGB-49 Battalion, stated that the operation was conducted around 2:30 am. The arrest was made in front of the Dargah Filling Station on the Jashore-Benapole highway. During the search, BGB personnel also confiscated two mobile phones and Taka 1,655 in cash from Faruk.
According to preliminary interrogation, Faruk admitted that his intention was to smuggle the gold bars into India via the Benapole border. BGB officials have filed a case against the accused, who has been handed over to Jashore Kotwali Police Station for further legal proceedings. This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by Bangladeshi border security forces to combat the smuggling of precious metals across the country's borders.
Gold smuggling has been a persistent issue along the Bangladesh-India border, with smugglers often employing various methods to evade detection. The seizure of such a significant amount of gold bars by the BGB underscores the vigilance and effectiveness of their operations. It also raises questions about the security measures in place to prevent such high-value smuggling activities.
This incident adds to the growing list of successful operations carried out by the BGB in recent months. The force has been actively working to curb cross-border smuggling, which not only affects national security but also has economic implications. The arrest of Faruk and the recovery of the gold bars is a testament to the commitment of BGB personnel in safeguarding the nation's borders.
