In a nationally televised address, President Javier Milei declared that the 'winds of change' are now favorable to Argentina's long-standing claim over the Falkland Islands. He cited Washington's readiness to reconsider its neutral stance on the territorial dispute with Britain. 'There are winds of change in the world that are favorable to our claim,' Milei stated, referring to the South Atlantic archipelago, a British territory since 1833.

The Falkland Islands, known to Argentines as Las Malvinas, have been a contentious issue between Argentina and Britain, culminating in a war in 1982. Milei's comments come amid rising tensions, including a recent British-Israeli oil project near the islands, which has sparked outrage in Argentina. Flanked by cabinet members, Milei vowed that Argentina would not'stand idly by' and announced stricter sanctions against companies involved in Falklands oil projects.

On Tuesday, Argentine Falklands War veterans and environmental lawyers filed a lawsuit to halt the project promoted by the British company Rockhopper and the Israeli company Navitas in waters north of the islands. Milei argued that the project violates a United Nations resolution urging both sides to refrain from unilateral actions while the dispute remains unresolved. 'We will not allow it,' he asserted, warning that permitting such projects would encourage the British government to deepen its occupation and exploitation of Argentine resources.

Milei's address also highlighted his declining approval ratings, which currently stand at around 34 percent, just over a year before he seeks re-election. His strong stance on the Falklands issue appears to be an attempt to rally national sentiment and shore up support. The territorial dispute remains a deeply emotional issue in Argentina, periodically escalating tensions with Britain.

The recent attention on the Falklands has been further fueled by US President Donald Trump's threat to intervene in the dispute, adding another layer of international complexity. Milei's government is leveraging these global dynamics to strengthen its position, even as domestic support for his actions remains divided.
