Two people have died and one remains missing after a flash flood struck the Grand Canyon, one of the world's most famous natural wonders. The flood, caused by a sudden monsoonal downpour, sent torrents of water, rock, and debris down a popular hiking trail, washing out campgrounds and damaging infrastructure.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
US Park Rangers have made contact with over a dozen people initially reported missing. Dave Black of the National Park Service stated that 82 people were rescued over the weekend. Rangers are cross-checking camping permits, license plates, and other information to confirm the whereabouts of everyone known to be in the canyon during the flood.
Rescue efforts were temporarily hampered by continuous heavy rains, a common occurrence during the seasonal monsoon in Northern Arizona. Better weather is expected to aid in the search for the one unaccounted individual and any day hikers who may have been caught in the flood.

The flood damaged or destroyed 40 percent of the Transcanyon Waterline, a crucial water pipeline for the park. Water restrictions have been implemented, and wood and charcoal fires are banned in affected areas. Significant infrastructure damage, including destroyed footbridges, has been reported, blocking access to certain areas.
Despite the tragedy, the Grand Canyon remains open to visitors. Trails from the South Rim are passable, though visitors are warned of potential dangers due to sudden squalls. Flash floods are common in the region during the monsoon season, and visitors are urged to exercise caution.
