Lionel Messi's illustrious career with the Argentina national team is punctuated by several defining moments that have shaped his legacy. From his early struggles to his triumphant moments, Messi's journey with Argentina is a testament to his resilience and talent.

Early Career and Struggles

Messi's international career began in 2005 as an 18-year-old, but his debut was marred by a red card just 90 seconds after coming on as a substitute in a friendly against Hungary. Despite this inauspicious start, he quickly made his mark, scoring his first international goal in the 2006 World Cup against Serbia and Montenegro. However, early disappointments followed, including quarter-final exits in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and a Copa America final loss to Brazil in 2007.

Triumphs and Heartache

Messi's journey with Argentina saw him lead the team to the 2014 World Cup final, only to lose to Germany. This was followed by consecutive Copa America final defeats to Chile in 2015 and 2016, leading Messi to briefly retire from international football in heartbreak. However, he returned and, under coach Lionel Scaloni, led Argentina to victory in the 2021 Copa America, ending a 28-year drought for the national team.

Messi's crowning achievement came in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he scored seven goals and provided three assists, including a brace in the final against France. His penalty in the shootout secured Argentina's third World Cup title. Despite initial plans to retire after the 2022 triumph, Messi continued to play, leading Argentina to another Copa America title in 2024 before participating in his sixth World Cup this year.

Messi's international career concluded with a record 34 World Cup appearances and 21 goals, though Argentina's loss to Spain in the final marked an anti-climactic end to his 207-match, 125-goal journey with the national team.
