Fourteen people were killed and five others injured when a landslide buried worshippers at a monastery in Ethiopia's northern Amhara region. The incident occurred early Monday, following heavy rainfall, lightning, and thunder, according to the head of the diocese. The mudslide hit the Tsadkane Mariam Orthodox monastery in Sela Dingay, approximately 200 kilometers northeast of the capital, Addis Ababa.

Incident Details

The landslide happened after heavy overnight rainfall, accompanied by lightning and thunder. The mudslide carried rocks down a hillside and buried part of the monastery. Fourteen worshippers who were praying in the monastery were killed instantly, while three severely injured individuals were taken to Debre Birhan Hospital for treatment.

Context and Background

Ethiopia is experiencing heavy rainfall during its rainy season, which runs from June to September. The Horn of Africa nation, home to around 130 million people, is frequently affected by climate-related disasters. In July 2024, a landslide in the south of the country killed at least 257 people, while 80 others died in floods and landslides in the same region in March.

Impact and Response

Local authorities in North Shewa zone reported the deaths of 14 people due to an earthquake and a sudden landslide on Monday, without providing further details. Ethiopia, where more than three-quarters of the population lives in rural areas, continues to grapple with the effects of severe weather.

Why This Matters for Bangladesh

Though the incident occurred in Ethiopia, the frequency and severity of landslides and floods due to heavy rainfall highlight the global impact of climate change. Bangladesh, already prone to severe weather events, can draw lessons from Ethiopia's challenges in disaster management and climate resilience.
