The government is currently reviewing the construction of a 683 MW hydropower plant in partnership with Nepal. This was announced by Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) today. The minister stated that the project is under consideration as part of efforts to import more hydropower from Nepal.
Current Hydropower Imports
Minister Mahmud also mentioned that Bangladesh is currently importing 40 MW of hydropower from Nepal as part of energy cooperation. He assured that if any legal measures are required in the future for regional hydropower, the necessary steps will be taken.
Parliamentary Context
The minister provided this information in response to a starred question tabled by Fahima Nasrin, a member of the reserved women's seat from the ruling party. The question pertained to the government's plans for hydropower cooperation with Nepal.
Future Prospects
The proposed 683 MW hydropower plant is seen as a significant step towards enhancing energy security and meeting the growing energy demands of Bangladesh. The project, if materialized, would substantially increase the hydropower import capacity from Nepal.
