In a significant development, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has entrusted its Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman with the crucial task of selecting the party's nominee for the upcoming presidential election. This decision was made by the party's National Standing Committee during a meeting held at the Chairperson's political office in Gulshan on August 1, 2026.

The meeting, which lasted for an hour and a half, was chaired by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and included a range of topics, from the country's political landscape to the local government elections and internal party matters. The extensive discussions were aimed at setting the party's strategy for the presidential elections and ensuring a robust approach to local governance.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP Secretary General, emphasized the importance of this decision, stating, 'The Standing Committee has entrusted the Prime Minister and BNP Chairman to take the necessary decisions regarding the presidential election and select the party's nominee.' This underscores the party's confidence in Tarique Rahman's leadership and his ability to navigate the complex political environment.

Salahuddin Ahmed, a Standing Committee Member and Home Minister, further elaborated on the timeline for the presidential election. He noted that the current Acting President, the Speaker, must be replaced within 90 days, as per the law. The Election Commission is already prepared to conduct the election, and once the schedule is announced, Tarique Rahman will determine the BNP's candidate.

Regarding the local government elections, Salahuddin Ahmed mentioned that the BNP is committed to holding these elections by the end of this year or early next year. Preparations are currently underway to ensure a smooth electoral process.

The meeting was attended by several prominent BNP leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Babu Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Begum Selima Rahman, and AZM Zahid Hossain. Their collective efforts reflect the party's dedication to maintaining political stability and fostering democratic governance.
