Journalist leaders in Bangladesh have called on the government to form the 10th wage board immediately to increase salaries and ensure job security for media workers. The demand was made during a discussion organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka. The tenure of the ninth wage board, awarded in 2019, has already expired, leaving journalists without a new salary structure. The leaders stressed the importance of a new wage board to ensure fair salaries, allowances, and financial benefits for journalists. They also urged the government to ensure job security for journalists and media employees.
Demand for Fair Compensation
The call for the 10th wage board comes as the ninth wage board's tenure has expired, leaving journalists without updated salary structures. DUJ Joint Secretary Md. Didarul Alam highlighted the need for the new wage board, stating that the previous one was issued controversially and has not been effective. He emphasized that the new wage board is essential for ensuring fair salaries and allowances for journalists, which is crucial for maintaining an independent and strong media.
Historical Context and Job Security
The discussion also reflected on the historical role of journalists in Bangladesh, particularly during the July Mass Uprising in 2024, which led to significant political changes. Md. Didarul Alam noted the contributions of journalists in establishing the rule of law, good governance, and protecting people's rights. He called for proper recognition of these contributions and stressed the need for job security for journalists, which is vital for their continued work in upholding media independence.
