Dhaka College philosophy student Mehedi Hasan, who was shot in the knee during the July uprising in Rampura, Dhaka, testified as the eighth witness in a case against four accused, including two army officers, for crimes against humanity. During his testimony at the International Crimes Tribunal-1, he showed the bullet wound on his knee, which entered from one side and exited from the other. The incident occurred on July 19, 2024, when he and around a thousand students and civilians were fired upon by police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members. Mehedi Hasan was later arrested by the police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) while receiving treatment at Holy Family Hospital but was released on August 5, 2024, due to his serious condition.
Incident Details and Aftermath
Mehedi Hasan recounted that on the day of the incident, he was standing in front of Rampura Delta Hospital around 5 PM when he was shot by BGB and police. He suffered nerve damage from the injury and now walks with support. He later identified the perpetrators from a Daily Star video report, including BGB's Redowan, Major Rafat, police ADC Rashedul, and Rampura Thana OC Mashiur, who led the firing on students and civilians. Two of the accused, former BGB officers Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Redowanul Islam and Major Mohammad Rafat-bin-Alam, were present in court. The other two accused, former police ADC Mohammad Rashedul Islam and former Rampura Thana OC Mohammad Mashiur Rahman, are fugitives. The accused face six charges, including murder.
