On August 3, 2026, the Barishal University Journalists' Association (BUJA) held a significant photo exhibition titled 'The First Free Campus of July: Barishal University through the Lens of the Media'. This event, held on the university grounds, aimed to preserve and honor the memories of the July Mass Uprising, a pivotal moment in recent history.
Exhibition Details and Significance
The exhibition was inaugurated by Barishal University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Md. Mamun Or Rashid, who highlighted the importance of remembering and paying tribute to those who participated in the uprising. The event displayed a total of 36 photographs, with 30 capturing key moments from the July Mass Uprising and six featuring reports published in national newspapers by BUJA members during the movement.
The photographs depicted the struggle, resistance, and participation of students, local residents, and members of the university community throughout the uprising. The event was attended by notable figures, including Barishal Press Club President Aminul Islam Khasru, university Registrar Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Alim Mridha, Proctor Associate Professor Md. Mehedi Hasan Sohag, Barishal District Journalists' Union President Azad Alauddin, and Prothom Alo photojournalist Md. Saiyan.
Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Md. Mamun Or Rashid emphasized that the exhibition was a meaningful initiative that not only preserves the memories of the July Mass Uprising but also pays homage to the sacrifices made by those who fought during the movement.
Aminul Islam Khasru, the Barishal Press Club President, praised the journalists' association for their efforts in preserving the history of the movement through the exhibition, stating that the July Mass Uprising sought to strengthen the anti-discrimination movement and protest the repression carried out by the then government against students and ordinary citizens.
BUJA President Md. Robiul Islam expressed satisfaction over the successful arrangement of the exhibition and mentioned that the association hopes to organize similar events in the future. The exhibition attracted leaders of different student organizations, members of the journalists' association, teachers, students, university officials, and staff.
This exhibition serves as a reminder of the collective efforts and sacrifices that led to significant changes, ensuring that the history of the July Mass Uprising is remembered and honored.
