20 Trinamool Congress (TMC) members of Parliament have submitted a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking separate recognition. Led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the group aims to support the BJP-led NDA. The move comes after a series of resignations and defections, leaving Mamata Banerjee with a significantly reduced presence in the Lok Sabha.
The split was finalized after a meeting at the residence of Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, where the rebel MPs gathered. The group includes prominent figures such as former football player Prasun Banerjee and actress-turned-politician Satabdi Roy. The defection is expected to impact the TMC's standing in the Lok Sabha, where they previously held 29 seats.
The defections follow a pattern seen in other parties, such as the Shiv Sena and NCP in Maharashtra, where rebel factions gained control of the party symbols. The BJP is now looking to further its influence by targeting other parties, including the DMK in Tamil Nadu.
